Yes, you keep your socks on!!
Go to a doctor you trust and are comfortable with. I've had both a man and a woman do it, and it really doesn't matter... they aren't down there for fun... they're doing their job.
You will go into the exam room and be asked to strip down to nothing but your socks, and to put on a gown with the opening to the back. Next you will hop up on the bed. They may do a couple of normal things first... blood pressure, listen to lungs, etc. They may look at any moles, checking for skin cancer.
Next you will probably lie down and they will possible give you a breast exam... no big deal... they're not feeling you out, just feeling for suspicious lumps. Next, the internal exam.
You will put your feet into stirrups. The reason for this is to keep your feet as wide apart as possible. You will then be asked to let your knees spread wide... it's hard to do because you're nervous. Next, they may do the internal exam... this means that they insert a finger or two (using lots of KY Jelly and gloves) and they are feeling your internal organs (ovaries, uterus, etc). It's no big deal, just a few seconds.
Next, they will insert the speculum (Google Images it to see what it looks like). They will put it in and you will hear "click, click, click"... that's the speculum opening up the vagina. Next, they will scrape the cervix... you probably won't feel it, or if you do it won't hurt.
And that's it... they take the speculum out, and give you a little kleenex to clean up the extra KY Jelly... and then you get dressed!!
It is very important that you have an annual check-up.... it's okay to be nervous... just relax and breathe... bring someone along if it makes you more comfortable... or ask one of the medical assistants to be in the room with you.

It's totally normal to be nervous your first time. It doesn't hurt or anything, it's just uncomfortable. Ask the person to talk you through it. It shouldn't matter if it's a guy or girl, they are both doctors. Make sure you go to someone you're comfortable with. You need to relax or they can't do it properly and it could hurt if you have your PC muscles clenched. What they will do is, they insert a speculum, which can either be metal or plastic. It is scary looking because it seems big, but it shouldn't hurt. It feels weird because they will put it in and twist it around (uncomfortable, but it doesn't hurt). Then they will take a pap smear, which you probably won't feel at all. Then they will swab you with two long Q-tip like things, for common STDs. That will feel like pressure, and you may feel like you have to pee, but again it won't hurt. Then they will take out the speculum and the gyno will feel inside to make sure there's nothing out of the ordinary. Also, probably at the beginning he/she will do a breast exam to check for cancer. And you will have to spread 'em wide in stirrups or something, and it's vulnerable (and chilly...) but that's why you need a doctor you can trust. And yes, you can keep your socks on. No one likes going, but it's not as bad as getting your teeth drilled or anything. Doesn't hurt. It's just uncomfortable. It helps to have your mom or someone come with you so you know there's someone waiting for you at the end. And if you're self-conscious, remember they deal with EVERYONE, and that includes people who have disgusting looking infections and people who don't have any sense of cleanliness, so they've seen the worst. They don't judge you. Good luck!

Basicly they will give you a breast exam and then a peliv one(push on your pelvic area and if its pain ful or not)and then the put you in stirrups and stick that metal thing in and do a quick look and swab of your cervix. Really it only takes a few min. and its done. Its ok to be nervous...EVERYONE is wether its your first one or the 100 one you've had!!
1. go to whoever makes you more comfortable(man/women)for me it was man.
2.yes you have to put your feet in stirrups.
3.go ahead keep your socks on!!
I dont think any women LIKES going to the gyno but its life we all have to do it. Its not painful more uncomfortable than anything and its over pretty quickly. Once you go to the same one for awhile its not that bad. My hubby and I saw my gyno at the store once a few days before my appointment and i yelled down the isle at him "hey dont forget our date on thursday" his face turn bright red as did my hubbys but at the appointment we got a good laugh out of it!!!

It is not demeaning to put your feet in sturrups they have to to do a vaginal exam, they have to see what they are doing, you can keep your socks on , & choses whatever you feel comfortable with. I prefer a woman, however after having children and sooo many docs seeing me down there I honestly dont care. It is not that bad, the worst part is when they put the speculum in & just take a deep breath close your eyes & exhale.

You get to keep your socks on. It is your choice as to what gender doctor you want. It is one of the "joys" of being a woman. The doctor always has a nurse present in the room during the exam. The first time is always the hardest, but you wont be the first one nor the last one. Good luck!

I'm more comfortable going to a male gynecologist, you may be more comfortable going to a female. I'm simply able to talk more easily with men than women.
It's not a horrifying and traumatizing experience unless you make it one. I don't know what kind of horror stories you've heard, but they're most likely over-exaggerated. Over-exaggeration monster, rawr. Seriously. It is uncomfortable. But if you relax and allow the doctor to do their job, it'll be over faster and with less discomfort.
They don't want to hurt you. A pelvic and breast exam are for your health. You don't hear about it very often, but even young women can get breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer and cervical cancer. Not all types of cervical cancer are caused by HPV.
Here's your chance to talk about birth control, sex, STD's, other types of infections women are prone to and any other reproductive questions.

No, they might desire to no longer launch any suggestion which you do no longer want them to. in spite of the undeniable fact that, once you're area of your determine's coverage and you desire particular assessments or drugs that could have something to do with despite you want to maintain inner maximum, your mum and dad might have the flexibility to determine it out in the event that they're nosy sufficient (in spite of the undeniable fact that maximum something could be happened as a a habitual technique or a straight forward an infection). yet medical doctors, distinctly gynecologists, are completely conscious of the might desire to be discreet, they thoroughly comprehend your concerns, and from my experience, are very sympathetic. lots of the wonderful medical doctors.

Go as soon as possible! It's painless, even though embarassing, but it's really okay. Really doesn't matter if you see a man or a women - they are both totally professional. Yes, you can keep your socks on.

Sounds like you would be more comfortable with a woman. They have to have you open so they can check you thoroughly.
