Do you have a link for the study? I found nothing about it on the Men's Health Magazine website.
I did find this in Wikipedia, though:
Brain size
See also: Craniometry, brain size and intelligence
In 1861, Paul Broca examined 432 human brains and found that the brains of males had an average weight of 1325 grams, while the brains of females had an average weight of 1144 grams. A 1992 study of 6325 Army personnel found that men's brains had an average volume of 1442 cm³, while the women averaged 1332 cm³. (Ankney 1992[8]). The differences are smaller but persist when adjusted for body size (Ankey, 1992).
In 2005, Haier et al. reported that compared with men, women show more white matter and fewer gray matter areas related to intelligence. They also report that the brain areas correlated with IQ differ between the sexes. They conclude that men and women apparently achieve similar IQ results with different brain regions. [9]
Although women may have smaller brains than men, they appear to have greater neuron density in their prefrontal lobe ([10]), which is involved in higher functions such as planning, judgement, and language, although men still have higher absolute grey matter volume than women in their prefrontal lobe

I compare men to the bigger, less refined, cars of the past that used a lot of gasoline but weren't particularly technologically advanced. I compare women to today's smaller, more refined, cars that don't use as much gas and that are technologically advanced.
Little boys are often nurtured in a way that does not encourage the development of the type of intellligence that is often associated with women (although boys with the right nurturing have it too), and that intelligence is more of a social/human intelligence. As a result, boys are often quite tuned out to some of the social goings on in school and are more apt to want to focus on a subject like math, which appeals to the because of the certainty of it.
Also, girls are more likely to be distracted by the type of intelligence that is normally associated with girls (verbal, social, human-understanding), so even if they have superior math/logic ability they may not be as interested in focusing on that because they are often more tuned in to "the world", other people, and their own personal development.
Women do not have the history of having invented the number of things men have because up until the fairly recent past (the 70's) little girls were not encouraged to pursue the required subjects in school and were even ignored in school much of the time; and women throughout history have been kept back.
Enjoy your larger brain, but I'm the one who came up with this answer; while you were the one who had the question. LOL

Listen. when the staff at some "Men's Health Magazine" start weighing cadaver brains...did they borrow their scales from the folks at the cafeteria?
Just wanted to let the staff at this men's mag on a secret: this is not news at all; this factoid has been known probably for 100 years or so. As someone before me correctly pointed out: an elephant's brain is larger than even the largest human brain. The african grey parrot has a brain roughly the size of a shelled walnut: they are highly intelligent, sentient beings who can and do speak with cognition (when they feel like it). They are infinitely more intelligent than a manatee (an animal which possesses a much larger brain). In conclusion - obviously - it's not size that matters, Du-Uh.

No, the difference is negligible when the difference is corrected for body weight. This is known as the brain-mass to body-mass ratio, or, the Encephalizaton quotient. Men have larger brains, yes, but they also have larger bodies. A larger body requires a larger brain to compensate for the "general maintenance" (respiratory function, blood flow, etc.) of that larger body. Take, for instance, the sperm whale. If a larger brain was all that mattered when it came to intelligence, these animals would be the smartest on the planet, right? But this isn't true, obviously, and when the "Encephalization Quotient" is taken into consideration, it is shown that the large brain of this animal is mostly used toward the "maintenance" of that larger body. The "brain-mass to body-mass ratio" takes body size into account, and then determines how much brain mass is left over, once the "general maintenance" is taken care of. Humans, more than any other animal on the planet, have more brain-mass "left over" when body function is taken into account. THIS is what accounts for intelligence, and for humans extraordinary intelligence, such as self-awareness, and abstract thought. To make this more clear lets compare two hominids, the Neanderthal brain and Homo sapiens brain. Judging by the size of a Neanderthal skull, they had larger brains...but were they smarter? No, according to the Ecephalization quotient. Neanderthals were more "robust" than humans, meaning they had larger body sizes (they were actually shorter, but their skeletal structures were heavier, and they were much more muscular). When the Encephalization quotient is applied, the larger brain mass of the Neanderthal is required to support the function of their larger body.
In other words, when the body-mass to brain-mass ratio is taken into account, men and women have about equal amounts of brain "left over" and suggests we are of equal intelligence. I hope this clears it up for those who "don't understand" what body size has to do with it.

To answer your question, no, brain size does not determine intelligence.
What they teach in neuroanatomy these days is that though mens' brains weigh more, female brains have more frequent connections, adding up to a similar processing power.
Men have larger brains because they have larger skulls than females. Both sexes have brains that are proportionate to the size of their skull.
HTH.

it's been proven that the difference between men and women's brains is small enough that a women that wants to can reach the level of mathematical efficiency of men more or less as easily as men do. then, of course, there are the individual variations (that seem to be created just to mess up this sort of study)

Guess what? The average elephant's brain weighs more than any human brain! Does that mean they're smarter? No! Bigger doesn't mean better. It is true that male brains tend to be better at math related stuff, but it's also true that woman's brains are better at multi-tasking, and comprehending language related stuff. And there are always exceptions to this generalization. I believe male and female brains are equally intelligent. They're different, but neither is better than the other.

Well. The male brain is more adept to spatial thinking by the very evolution of our species. We had to learn very quickly and very well how to think in these terms in order to make damn sure the women had what they needed for the propagation and the welfare of our own. We had to!
It was that or die as a species. This means of thinking came about through our territorial instincts to survive. It was a matter of life and death to be able to think in spatial terms to hunt out our food and to protect the territory of our food source against any other tribe, family, group of humans that did not belong in our midst. Immigrants so to speak.

Reminds of a study some guy did back in the 1800s or early 1900s. He "proved" that whites were superior to blacks because the brain cavity in the skulls of white people were bigger then the brain cavity of black people. It turns out that he was using the cadavers of fully grown white males and the cadavers of young black women and children. Were the men and women of equal height and weight? The same age?

That might mean something if the average man and woman were the same weight. They are not. It's all a matter of brain to bodyweight ratios. HUMANS are pretty uniform that way.
