I want to landscape over the leach field (currently lawn). I know I need to stay away from plants with extensive root systems. Can someone direct me a site that has a listing of suitable plants? I live in Northern California, Sierras, elev 3700'.

Azalias and dogwoods should do fine, as they have a very shallow root system.

Landscaping near and around septic systems is of concern to many homeowners. Whether drainfields or mounds, Minnesota septic systems must have a minimum of three feet of unsaturated soil between the drainfield or point of infiltration and limiting soil condition such as hardpan, bedrock or saturated soil in order to properly treat sewage. A mound system is required if three feet of separation cannot be achieved with an inground trench system. Mound systems are designed to maximize the absorption capacity of existing soil . Mound location, size, shape, construction procedures and maintenance of the mound all interact in determining how well the system will function. Placement of plants on and near the mound must be done with care to ensure a properly functioning septic system. Plants enhance the system by removing moisture and nutrients from the soil and providing cover to prevent erosion.

it fairly is not stable to plant any shallow rooted tall plant using fact the plant being tall will desire an anchor to hold them into the floor. The shallow roots can't try this. it is going to bend or come out of the floor with time, wind, etc. i would not plant something with deep roots the two. As you recognize, they'll bypass right into your strains and fill it up. purely had a buddy had hers wiped clean out and it cost $3000. Hmm. basically an exceedingly final theory. you should use great pots and you're able to be able to plant what you like. of direction, relies upon on the size of the pot. could use trellises too. If all else fails you're able to be able to could purchase a privateness fence.
