You can breast feed with the flu. Granted you have to wash your hands and face and wear a clean shirt when you do. Make sure that you cover your mouth with a kleenex and avert your face from the baby when you do.
The antibodies and vitamins will protect the baby from the bug. Drink plenty of fluids avoiding including orange juice. Continue taking your prenatal vitamins or if you are out, drug stores sell vitamin supplements for nursing moms OTC. Make sure you get rest and drink some geritol if you can. The iron will help you from succumbing to the illness and from the stresses of breast feeding. As long as you keep clean and lay your baby on a clean towel if you lay in bed with him, you should be fine.

Absolutely!!! It's actually really good for the baby because baby will get all the antibodies to fight the cold from you and help build the immune system. It's actually common for everyone in a household to get sick except for the breastfed baby. Just be careful about what medications you take. Keep up the nursing and hope you feel better soon.

Absolutly!!! It will help protect baby againts many cold germs.
During any "ordinary" illness such as a cold, sore throat, flu, tummy bug, fever, mastitis, etc. you should continue to breastfeed. Just remind your doctor you are nursing so that if medications are needed he can prescribe something that is compatible with breastfeeding. Most medications are safe to take while breastfeeding, and for those that are not recommended there is almost always an alternative medication that is safe.

Yes, and you'll be passing the antibodies on to the baby. A breastfeeding baby is sometimes the only one in the family not to come down with the cold.

Yes, the cold germs come out of your mouth and you often get them on your hands, but they're not in the breast milk. You still have to take precautions to not breath on the baby. I'd wear a surgical mask type cover on my mouth if the baby is a newborn.

Yes. Your baby actually has a better chance of not getting a cold if you do continue breastfeeding because breastmilk contains nutrients & antibodies that help to build up a baby's immune system.

Yes! In fact, you can pass your antibodies on to your baby that way so they will be less likely to catch it. Just be cautious of using any medications, check with your dr. or pharmacist to see if they are safe for breastfeeding. And get plenty of fluids!

Yes you can. I spoke to a breastfeeding consultant last week at my local hospital because I had a cold and a slight fever. She said that it is quite fine. Your baby is more likely not to get sick!
