World Lit? So you could do English or American, right? You could try something by Kipling or Longfellow--they are good for their narratives. Robinson's Miniver Cheevy is rich, but not too obtuse. Try the link below for an analysis.

A ten minute speech is actually longer than you think it's going to be. I'm not sure a short poem is your best option. But since your assignment gives you the option of a short story, maybe you can find a little more to elaborate with a little more to begin with. I like the work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. You should be able to find some of this Nobel winner's work online, like the poem "Puppet" or the fun short story "The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World." If you are bilingual, read them in Spanish first. You'll enjoy them more.

The best way is to find something that connects to you personally so you can use your own response as guidance.
Emily Dickenson wrote some good, deceptively simple poems that are really personal to me, but if you look I'm sure you can find something else, too... Wow... I guess that's not very helpful, is it? I think it's just too much a matter of personal taste for me to name a poem and guarantee that you'll be able to elaborate on it.

Try Frank O'Hara " The Day Lady Died". Its about Billy Holiday's death. Its accessible and interesting, the style is simple enough, and there should be plenty of info about it.
