Toronto blues artist gets attention with Coke ad

TORONTO -- For years he's been an obscure artist known only in blues circles, but Paul Reddick's talents are becoming more widely appreciated thanks to a slick, new commercial by Coca-Cola.

The ad shows a man in a convenience store filling his cup with cola, taking a few sips and topping up again before going to the cashier. Coke then assures viewers that "sip stealing" isn't a felony. All the while Reddick's song "I'm a Criminal" is playing in the background.

The Toronto blues man - who's up for five Maple Blues Awards on Monday for his current CD, Villanelle - says he's surprised the five-year-old track was selected.

"The song is "I'm a Criminal". That's not I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing," he said, referring to the familiar ditty first used in a 1970s Coke campaign.
