Would a pet rat fit in a cage for gerbils/hampsters/mice with the tunnels and levels? I had a pet rat many years ago but it was really rather large, and I'm not sure if this is a normal rat size, or if rats would fit in "normal" small animal habitats.

Rats get rather large. [Personally I love rats, theyre so intellegent!] But would one fit in a hamster cage? Sorry, no. Itd be unhappy in a cage so small. Good luck!

Hi. Yes, rats can fit in a multi-leveled hamster cage. I prefer going with Coast Cages. They make rat and hamster cages. If you go to: www.petco.com, you'll find the 3 level Coast Cage Del Mar Rat or Hamster cage. I have 2 medium sized rats who used to live in the same cage for 2 weeks and then I bought a cage by the same company for $89.99 at Petco. It's a palace compared to their last home and it came with food and water dishes and a wheel. It's also very light.

If you have 1 large rat, I'd go with the Coast Cage Del Mart 3 tiered/level cage for $34.99 . If you have more than 1 rat, then you should go with the cage I have now.

Definitely don't go with the plastic tunnel cages made for hamsters. Your rat may get his/her head stuck in the tunnel. I've found that PetsMart doesn't have near the good quality of cages that Petco has. Rats are very active and need a big home to move around comfortably in.

Will a rat physically fit? Yes, of course. However rats should NEVER be kept long-term in one-story cages made for hamsters. Rates are extremely active and playful. Idealy they should be kept in cages for ferrets, though any two- or three-story cage would do. They should have plenty of toys in the cage and things to stimulate their minds. Also, as for the cages with the tunnels - these will not fit a rat and they're HORRID to keep cleaned. Personally I'd never recommend them.

Also, rats should not be kept single. Same sex pairs are best (unless you plan on breeding, though not at your current 'rat level'). You can keep a single rat, but then they need at least two to four hours of playtime a day, versus the one hour needed if kept in a pair or more.

I'd suggest doing some more research online before getting another rat. They're amazing pets, though. =)

Rats are fairly good sized animals. You could put a rat in a hamster cage, but it needs a larger size habitat to really move around and be happy. I have a rat and he's in a larger cage. However, he seems to sleep a lot. Maybe he needs a playmate. If so, the extra room will really come in handy.

It's not suitable. I would give 1-2 rats a 40 gallon tank.

No, hamster cages are far too small. Also you shouldnt keep lone rats, its very unkind, rats need company.
