Look at TV and phenomenon of reality shows. Even the lowest form of entertainment (in terms of brain power needed to enjoy it) are getting dumber. There isn't even any artistic or intellectual stimulation anymore...we just watch attention seeking wannabes with delusions of grandeur act like idiots and enjoy it.

TV: TV used to be informative or show family values. Now it is either totally stupid and moronic or killing. Nothing to learn.
Computers: Computers used to be for businesses and to hopefully speed things along. Now practically everybody has one and nobody knows how to open a book anymore to find an answer. Let the computer do it. You don't even do your own homework. You get others to do it for you. What will you learn from this? Instead of searching on the computer for the things you need you have others do it for you. How hard is it really to go to ask.com or something and type in dumbing down? I just did it cause I never heard of this. And there it was. Exactly what you are doing now. Taking the lazy way out instead of reading and finding the answer.
Jobs: Does anybody work with their hands anymore? Is everybody out for a computer job? And why? Cause that's all they know how to do? You don't need to know how to get along with other people cause what you will work on all day long is dead. It's only a machine.
Social: There isn't any social life anymore. Everybody is sitting home on a computer. How smart do you have to be? Nobody worries about spelling or anything on here. Mistakes are made but the stuff on here is totally wrong. In years to come nobody will even be able to communicate.
Education: There isn't any. Nobody wants to learn anything. Let the computer do it.
Summary: Children in school should not be allowed to use computers for homework. They should learn how to use books. Just let the electric go out. Then what will you do? I'm sure you won't do your homework. You'll have no way to do it. And heaven forbid your batteries die in your calculator. You may as well just bury yourself now.
NO BRAINS NO GAINS.

Check the ranking of the education system, worldwide, now - especially in the hard sciences - and a few decades ago. I believe you find the US has not moved up on the list but has fallen many places.
Just as a quick check, look at how many questions on Yahoo have spelling problems, poor or non-existent sentence structure, and lack of capitalization. All this with check spelling!

if you study the American philosopher/sociologist John Rawls, he talks about how we in trying to establish equality adopt a strategy of pulling all people up to a standard minimum, oftentimes pulling the higher ones back down with what he calls a "veil of ignorance". so you could talk about the No Child Left Behind Act, which is doing exactly that-- lowering standards for school testing so everyone must raise up to it, though the emphasis on higher learning probably declines

All traffic signs are now pictures. The ability to read is no longer needed in order to navigate on the highways. Also, 10% of college students think that Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech is about the issue of slavery (pre-Civil War). Oh yeah...and then there is MTV!

Do a search on "Brain Drain."
There are many people that travel to other countries to conduct research (stem cell, fusion, toxicology, etc.), many of those people would rather just live in the countries that they travel to instead of getting jet lagged all the time. If these people have kids, the children end up growing up and most likely staying there because it becomes "home". We managed to get Einstein out of Germany because the political environment wasn't cooperative to him, its much like that.

In less serious terms, a lot of Americans come here to ask questions directly from their homework and people primarily do their homework FOR them although this is only supposed to HELP with homework.
Of course, not referring to this because answers here are broad and general.

We can name more movie stars than our own states. We can also name more characters from the Simpsons than the Amendments.
