Newborns start making tears when they are about two weeks old, but often it is just enough to keep their eyes moist and not enough to make real tears that you can see when they cry. Infants often don't develop real tears that you can see until they are much older and about seven or eight months old.

Babies do produce tears right from the start, the quantities are so small in the beginning that they go unnoticed. It can actually take several months before a baby cries with "real" salt water tears. Unless your baby has other problems with her eyes for example if they are very red, dry or seen to be infected, then this might be something you need to worry about. I would just keep a close eye on her eyes. And keep in good contact with her doc.

RE:
When do babies begin to cry real tears?
I was wondering when to expect the tearducts to be fully developed and tears begin to come in.

i just searched internet, and found this response Hi, Danielle, As a mother of six, I only had one infant that did not make tears naturally and eventually had to have his tear ducts opened. Sometimes at birth a small, thin flap of skin covers the area where tears drop from our eyes. The tear ducts will often open on their own between birth and one year of age. I understand that there is usually not a major concern if the tear ducts are not open, unless the baby has reached his or her one year birthday without tear production or if there is infection, swelling, or fever associated with the tear duct area. I have a 10 week old and he has cried tears for about a month now. When I left the hospital they said to watch for tears because it is very common for babies to have clogges tear ducts therefor needing tear duct surgery. My husband had this done when he was a baby, and it is more common than one would think.

Unless the tearducts are clogged, babies will cry tears at birth.
