Depends on what you need it for. If you need it as fill, try to get some for free from a contractor, just be sure to add a 4-6" layer of quality top soil, from a nursey, on top for planting a lawn. However, if you need it for flower gardens or shrub beds buy some screened loam from a nursery.

Free fill dirt? I'd be very very careful. It could be highly contaminated with toxic chemicals. I doubt anyone will deliver dirt for free........that would be very suspect.

More likely you'll have to pay for fill dirt. Contact sand and gravel companies for possible leads. Also you can run into terrible problems if the fill dirt is radically different from what is found naturally underneath.

Riverside is short on "top soil" being an arid climate. Most likely what comes as top soil is rotted manure and sand or loamy sand mixed together. This is best used sparingly.......several inches over the "top" of whatever you get underneath. Too much manure at one time complicates the salt situation.

Measure how much fill dirt you'll need. A "yard" is a cubic yard.

The world is full of dirt, dig some up. Or buy some from a contractor or landscaper.

call a Realtor, they usually know someone in construction that can and will sometimes deliver dirt to you
