Some axle grease rags were accidently washed with normal laundry, causing all the cloths to smell like axle grease. I've tried re-washing, but the smell in the laundry and washer remains.

Dawn dish soap. Pour straight onto spot. Let sit overnight or longer. Wash in hottest water possible (you may even want to boil a little water). If this helps but does not lift the grease completely, repeat until clean.

the oil field workers would put a can of coke in with their oily clothes to help clean them...must work wonders on our stomachs too

Take the stuff to the dry cleaners. Dry cleaning solvent will probably take it out.
