Best how to... or how not to speech I ever saw was on how to give a speech. The speaker brought out a bundle of props, overheads, a red laser pointer, busy confusing charts and this 4 ft plastic extending sword thing for a pointer to demonstrate how more is not better. It was worded with an ironic twist that left you wondering if he thought he was doing a good job for the first couple minutes... Then it was outright funny and informative. He had a nice handout with the DO's and DON'TS
Toast masters has great resources for speeches. Stick with something you know, then brainstorm for a bit thinking about how to make it relevant to your audience. who are they? why are they there? whats the purpose? to teach? entertain? get i t over with? persuade?
Another speech was on how to build a fruit basket. She had one basket being passed around the room. The second one was disassembled and she made it while talking....was way more interesting than anyone expected because her dad opened some fruit stand that is now national and she had lots of stats and some interesting slides (only 5) about the growth of the industry and impact of new packaging methods. Of course, she also had a gift for sales that was very apparent because by the end of her speech and explanation about the effort needed to ship and pack this stuff she had us all convinced that the labor and perishable nature of her product was such a great deal we actually wanted to buy it. People were asking. Thats someone who knows fruit. The point is---pick a subject that you can get excited about.... cause after the first 30 secs your attitude will come through....and make a big diff for the audience.
Good luck....be sure to post a followup so we know how it went.

It can be the basis of a great speech. THink of a couple of examples in the civil rights movement that she sang about that people think are ancient history - say you pick integrating the lunch counters. Then find an example of how it still occurs today..... say the example of Denny's restaurant that was successfully sued for not serving people of color just a couple of years ago. Your examples don't just have to reflect what occurs with any one minority group. Think of the unfair value judgements made about people from the middle east - how woman who wears a head scarf may have trouble getting a job - how the glass ceiling still prevents women from rising in corporate jobs.... unfortunately the list is endless. A couple of examples such as these, and then linking it to the lyrics she is singing about today. Especially useful are examples of what young people are realy important to them will personalize your interpretation of what Ms. Staples tells you when you hear her sing. Of course, you'll probably want to close with 20-30 seconds of a song - just make sure it is not so long you get graded down because you used too long a cut of music (instead of your own thoughts). good luck

Holly Cow!
There are so many answers given to you that require the basic elementary response of one who is trying to slip through the educational system, and get something for, nothing.
Tie your shoes. Puh-leeez
College, and these are the responses from people who will lead this country.
If you are at a loss to explain what you know in your years of life then I suggest you visit any company in your area. Let them know your purpose. You may find they would be honored to be the topic of a College class, and give you a detailed operation of any of the many things going on to keep the doors open. Your dilemma then would be how to keep it short enough for the time you may have.
My hope is that you don't find my response to you rude. Rather, I hope you see an opportunity to be the star who had something intelligent to report.

There were alot of speeches in my class on:
How to fix "fill in anything"
How to study properly
How to sucessed in life
How to plan for college/future
How to manage time
They really just want to see how well you can speak not really what your speaking about. The ones that get the best grades are usually the funny ones. Be creative and do something you know.

How about demonstating the proper use of different forms of birth control methods. I actually did this in a speech class and it was a hit, but I don't know comfortable your instructor would be?? like are they a real prude or kinda cool?

Hobbies are always a good idea. I think I did mine on the 5 ballet positions.
I have seen even a demonstration speech on how to make a PB&J sandwich.

Teach your class "How to wash your hands". You can teach it in 5 mins and they will never forget it. This is especially useful for when you are in a public restroom.
If you decide this is the one... let me know and i'll run through it with you on Instant Messenger or email. It's not as easy as you might think.
