Fill up the 3, dump it into the 7. Fill up the 3 and dump it into the 7 again. By now you will have 6 cups in the 7 cup container. Next, fill up the 3 cup and pour 1 cup into the 7 cup container. Then dump out the 7 cup and pour the 2 cups into the 7 cup container. Then fill the 3 cup and pour that into the 7 cup. By then you will have 5 cups in the 7 cup container.

Hi,
This is pretty close to the question in Die Hard 3, but I think this one is impossible. The closest I got is if you have two 3 cup containers:
First fill the 7 cup
Second pour the 7 cup into the 3 cup, leaving 4 cups in the 7 cup container
Third, empty the 3 cup and again pour from the 7 cup into the 3 cup leaving 1 cup in the big 7 cup container.
Set aside the 1 cup of water.
Now fill the 7 cup, pour into 3 cup leaving 4 cups of water left. Add the 1 cup you set aside to the 4 cups to get 5.

Use 1/2 of the 7 cup container (3 1/2 cups) and 1/2 of the 3 cup container (1 1/2 cups) and you will have 5 cups.

ok,
fill 3 cup container and pour it into the 7 cup one,
refill the 3 cup and pour it into the 7 cup one again, making the 7 cup container having 6 cups.
refill the 3 cup and fill up the 7 cup, making the 7 cup container full and 2 cups left in the 3 cup container
empty the 7 cup container and pour the 2 cups from the 3 cup container into the 7 cup container
refill the 3 cup container and pour it into the 7 cup container, adding that 3 cups to the 2 already there making it 5 cups

fill the 7. then pour that out into the 3 cup container twice. that leaves you with 1. pour the 1 into the 3 cup. then fill the 7. pour out 2 cups from there and you should have a full 3 cup. leaving you with 5 in the 7 cup container.

Pour the water in the 3 cup measuring cup....take three paper cups and divide the water evenly into them...making 1 cup each.
Now take 2 more paper cups and refill those so that they are even with the first three. Pour all 5 together and you will have 5 cups of water.
