I think that the best thing to do would be to check out a pet site or book. Think very carefully which pet you would love the most. You should be able to easily get basic info about the pet (feeding, cleaning, etc...). That way it will be an easy choice for you.
Here are some easy perts to keep...
Fish (piranhas), hamsters(and all the rest of the mouse family), snakes, spiders, and of course turtles.
I don't know about where you live, but I am working in Taiwan and you can get stingrays and a type of small shark (can't remember the name) here. Now that's a great conversation starter.

My honest opinion would be to get a plant. Because if a plant dies.. so what. And if you are wanting something you don't have to watch a lot, then there is really no animal out there. Unless you want a Snake or something because they only eat once or twice a week.. and when they are shedding their skin they don't eat for quite some time (I worked in a pet store for 2 years) But all animals need to be fed fresh food everyday and have fresh water.. that includes birds, hamsters, anything living. Reptiles take a lot of care too because they need their cages cleaned out everyday especially if there are still crickets in there that are not alive. Every animal needs some kind of attention.. and a plant needs the same kind of love as animals do, but like I said, if a plant dies.. throw it away! It's almost like a rule of thumb, get a plant, if you can keep it alive then by all means, get an animal. But pets are a lot of work. And remember, there are a lot of responsibilites that come with getting a pet! So be sure you are ready! Good Luck

before getting a pet .. you have decidde what kind.. what will you do with it.. how big you want, where do you live do you have a yard, how much out side time will it get .. or do you want it to have.. do you have a fenced in yard, doyou like big or little dogs, hairy dogs, do you want a wash and go dog, or one that willhave to go to the groomers alot.. so howmuch a month do you want to put in the do a a monthly basis, do you own or rent.. ifyour in an apartment you probly can thave a big dog because of yard space small dogs are good for apartment .. especcially the kind that dont go out side alot.. i live in an apartment.. no yard, no fence, hate big furry dogs.. so i have a tiny yorkie.. he lives on my lap or beside me.. cant put a lab or bull dog on your lap.. you have to take alll things in consideration.. once you figure out the type of dog you can work with ..then you can go to the breeds that fit that . and narrow it down from there..and work from there..
good luck
