Im going to be 16 and i want a job. I just dont want to work fast food. I know fast food is an option... I just want to see if theres anything else out there that i could do. Maybe a receptionist or something along those lines. I really need specific answers not just in general. Thanx for any help!

A daytime job is probably hard to handle since you are hopefully still in school. Maybe you could work part-time in call center or some type of customer service after school. Check with your state Workforce Commission for leads.

I think that the main reason teenagers work in fast food is because it's really easy to apply and they pay decent money (above minimum wage of course).

Look in the newspaper constantly. Do you have any decent skills? Can you type? are you good talking to people? This is what's going to get you a job being 16.

Here's my advice if you want a secretary job. Make a little resume and take it around to all the offices you can visit. The more you take it to the higher your chances are. Dress professionally (AKA not t-shirt and jeans) and you'd be surprised.

Second piece of advice is to ask all the people you know if they know of a job you could get hired at.

If you don't mind talking to people on the phone, you should try phone sales and phone surveys. Both of those jobs constantly have openings. Again, look in the paper and on bulletin boards. Every county also has an employment office, and they usually have a lot of the local job openings listed. Go visit them.

Our dentist had a high school girl come in and assist. I think she had some time off from school, like certain days or hours of the day she could work at the dentist's office. She was great!

Also, you could work at a nursing home/care facility. A lot of times I would see high school girls there painting the elderly ladies' fingernails bright cheery colors, or organizing activities for them.

I got a part time job cleaning floors at a retired military home, and it really was a good job.

If you're going to be a receptionist, you'll have to be good at it, so when you apply/interview, be prepared. Practice phone etiquette and use good handwriting on your application--neat handwriting has always helped me get good jobs! Good luck!

If you've given any thought to what you'd like to be, pursue a co-op program in that area. Contact companies you would be working for after you graduate and see if they participate in such programs. You might have to answer the phones during lunch or be a gofer for a while but eventually you will start to be given tasks with more responsibility. Remember, everyone has to pay their dues so don't be discouraged and stick with it.

If it's just a one-time summer job for some quick cash, take what you can get. Fast food or otherwise...

Work at a regular restaurant as a hostess or busser.
I worked as a busser over the summer and made over $9 per hour average, so it's definitely better than fast food.
