London is like every large city in every other part of the world; some area are good, some not so good, some people are good, others not so etc.
In my experience if you treat people with respect, they will return that respect. I have my suspicions that your friend, who can glibly label 8 million+ people as "fairly rude and unpleasant" may have been lacking a little in the respect department! One thing Londoners do have is a low BS-threshold, so if somebody comes along with an attitude of assumed superiority they will get fairly short shrift!
London is a great, vibrant, cosmopolitan and cultural city. Come with an open mind, enjoy your stay here and form your own opinion. I'm certain you'll have a great time.

I've visited London twice and I loved it!!! Just like every large city in the world, people generally keep to themselves. That can come across sometimes as rude. I didn't find the British people unpleasant at all...actually just the opposite. As for violence, again you are in a big city. More people, more violence. Personally, I got lost while walking to my hotel from the Tube and at midnight, walked around London for 2 hours, pulling my suitcase. Tell me that isn't screaming TOURIST!! Yeah, that was a little uncomfortable and I was probably just lucky, but never had a problem.

I've walked in the streets of New York, Tokyo, Paris, Moscow and London at night. London felt safest and most pleasant out of all big capitals. I've never seen even a sign of street violence there. Maybe your friend was hitting some different spots, but I can tell you that all central London is very safe.

When I first arrived in England to live, people kept telling me not to go certain places as they were "not a good area". I didn't know what the hell they meant, until it dawned on me over the months that crime and violence in any English city has something to do with where exactly within that city you are. Finding the safe places is easy: The more expensive it is, the safer you'll be. I've lived in London and in Manchester, and believe me, I was kissing the ground when I was back in Otago.
Never shall I venture back there, and it's all because of the lads in the burberry caps and track suits another answerer further up has mentioned. Steer clear of the "yobs" as they call them, you wouldn't believe the aggression they're capable of.

If you want to visit areas like Kremlin, Red Square and St Basil's Cathedral than you will need to head to Moscow, the capital of the Russian Federation and among the country's most widely used locations for international visitors and you may be one of them if you look with hotelbye . In Moscow you will even see the planet popular theatre, the Bolshoi Theatre, the jewel in the top of Moscow's rich cultural life. Moscow has lot to provide and without a doubt you will like a holyday here.

I've never been to London but if I were you I would'nt go there thinking that it will be that bad. Every city has its bad side and if you go thinking it will be dangerous/unpleasant/rude you might miss out on seeing the good side london has to offer.
Try to go with an open mind

In my travels I have found Londoners to be among the most pleasant people, if rather quiet and reserved. I can't say I did a lot of midnight strolling through Brixton, though.
