ok my hw says to find the unit rate of, for example, $408 for 24 months. which i did...it came out to $17/1month.

now it says to create a rate formula. can some1 plz tell me what a rate formula is??

Well, you got the first part right. How did you do it? You divided $408 by 24 months to come up with a dollar value per month.

What if you want to know how much you have after 3 months? Or 10 months? Or 17 months. You instinctively know how to do this: just multiply the number of months by 17 dollars. A rate formula puts this into an algebraic form, so that you have a formula with variables that you then plug in.

So: $408/24 months = 17 dollars/month

for some number of months, n, you have $17*n

So for n number of months, you have n*17 dollars, or

Total = $17*n

R=17*24 R= UR*T
R= 408
UR= 408/24 UR= A$/T
UR= 17 @ month

it's just a formula that you used to find your answer, like your question's would be:

Let A=amount; T=time; R=rate

A=TR

408($)=24(mths)R
408/24=R
17=R
therefore r is 17/month as you said

R=171*T
