Death Note - about a smart boy who comes to possess a notebook of death previously owned by a shinigami (Death God). If he writes the name of someone in the notebook, after 40 seconds, the person dies. If he writes down a name, he can write down the cause of death within the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds. The main character uses the power to cleanse the world of criminals, hoping to, in the future, assume the position of the world's god. Unfortunately for him, though, he's attracted the attention of Interpol and an amazingly intelligent detective named L. The mindgames begin.
As it's not in America, you can download it from a fansubbing site or go to YouTube to watch. If you ever find you can't wait, you can read the manga at www.mangarun.com.
Boogiepop Phantom - about a shinigami named Boogiepop who stalks a city. There are strange happenings in the city, and Boogiepop only makes them stranger. There have been a rash of disappearances in the student body of Shinyo Academy. Is it Boogiepop? If so, why? Is it something more sinister? The story is told in a fragmented, disjointed way, so the viewer has to be paying attention to figure things out.
Reading or watching Boogiepop and Others might help you to better understand it.
The complete box set (12 episodes and the live-action movie Boogiepop and Others) costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $40.
Serial Experiments Lain - the story centers on Lain, a 14-year-old who lives in a world with a high-powered version of the Internet called The Wired. The story centers on her attempting to discover her true identity in the world, and to what extent the real world is a projection of the Wired.
The complete set (13 episodes) may cost around $40. It might be on YouTube.
Last Exile - A steampunk anime. The story revolves around a boy and a girl, Clous Valka and Ravi Hedde, who, along with a mysterious girl, are caught in the middle of a war between the two powerful nations of Anatoure and Dysis. It's set on a planet called Prester, where humanity has made many technological advances (such as flying ships).
I saw it on YouTube, but I don't know how much the series costs. A fansubbing group named Anime-Kraze subbed it, so you could try to download the torrent.
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo - An anime based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas. It's set in the 5000s A.D. It's very good and is worth watching.
I don't know how much the series costs. Someone is uploading them on YouTube, though.
If you're fishing around for television series to download, you could check out animea.com. If you want Naruto or Bleach, you could type Dattebayo and Naruto or Bleach in the search engine.

Just watched an anime from 2 years ago named Gankutsuou. Its a future punk (or future opera) version of the Count Of Monte Christo. It has been altered in some ways to make it more original. And it's great like this. Its animation and beautifull art makes it a must watch.

R.O.D the TV - three sister for hire as detectives who can control paper. Great series, really funny. (you can catch a few episodes in You Tube ^ ^)
Rurouni Kenshin - ex-assassin samurai now living to make amends for his past mistakes
Detective Conan/Case Closed - a teenage detective "poisoned" with a formula that made him into a little kid
El Hazard - kind of like a mild Evangelion (?) crossed with other anime
One Piece and Full Metal Alchemist are also good ^ ^

Fullmetal Alchemist is the best anime, in my opinion. Bleach and One Piece are also good. However, One Piece is much better in Japanese. When they translated it for American tv, they dumbed it down so much that it just wasn't watchable for anyone over 11.
