My hubby likes the name Gabriel. I like it okay, but I hate the nickname Gabe. I know that chances are people are probably gonna call him that when hes older and I hate the thought.
Am I the only one who isnt fond of the name? What do you think of it?

I have NEVER heard that Gabriel means god. Has anyone else? I thought gabriel was one of the angels?
Also, Gabriel is a boys name. Gabrielle is a girls name. Just to clear that up for some people

My brother's name is gabriel. He's 21 and we call him gabriel. Sometimes people call him gabe, but he always introduces himself as gabriel and most of his friends call him gabriel. As your son gets older he can decide if he likes gabriel or gabe. Just like almost any name can have a shorter nickname. My name is Stephanie and I let people know that I don't like being called Steph, no one really has a problem with it(except older people...it's like they always have to shorten everyone's names...lol) Whatever you name him will be perfect. Don't fret!

I have known three Gabes in my life, all three are actually named Gabriel and all three of them are patient, kind, sweet and gentle. They are all a pleasure to know.
I am personally fond of the name because of these men but it is okay if you don't like it. You can insist on always calling your son Gabriel or you can continue the search. I absolutely love the name Broderick but my husband hates Brodie and so I don't think I will ever be able to name a son Broderick. You have to shout this name over and over again so you really should like it. You are not being silly or selfish, if you don't like, continue the search. You only get one chance to name your children.

I like Gabriel too, Gabe no, but its the same with my son Michael nobody in the family calls him Mike, but all of his friends do.
If you keep on calling him Gabriel that' s enough, don't bother about the friends.

I like the name Gabriel Alexander. Maybe for a nickname use part of his middle name? Alex? I know people will sometimes use their middle names for a nickname. Good luck on your decision.

If you call him Gabriel his whole life it shouldn't be an issue of people calling him Gabe.

i think it is a beautiful name. it is a strong name. but, see if you can compromise with your hubby, or you may just have to deal with it! and the name gabriel means the POWER of god, it doesn't mean he is the name of god, just means that he has god's power. gabriel was an angel sent from god. and alexander means to defend all man kind. very strong names

Yes, like it a lot. I don't like Gabe - just make sure you and your family and friends all call him by the full name. When he gets older, it's more out of your control. My younger brother was named Andrew, and we all called him that. When he finished school, however, and finished working, he wanted to be called Andy, so all his friends call him that. I just can't, however, he will always be Andrew.
