just got Limewire (free version) and they required me to click on a button that says that I will not download copyrighted content--or something to that effect. What the Hell is Limewire for, then? I don't get it. Is this just a technicality?

The reason that they ask you to check the box is in order to clear themselves of any legal rammifications due to the fact that downloading copyrighted material through peer to peer websites is illegal. This is the bottom line: It is illegal.

Here's a little tip for you. If you want to get LimeWire Pro without having to pay for it, simply type "LimeWire Pro" into the free LimeWire's search field and Voila! There it is...

The loophole here is (as I undertstand it) that LimeWire are in no position to take an individual to court for possessing a pirated copy of their software when the sole function of their software is for downloading copyrighted (pirated) material.

It's a technicality.
There is no stance stated by the government that it is illegal to download music. It is, however, illegal to sell it, as many of the "legal downloading sites" on the internet sometimes do.

At this time, it's simply a matter of conscience whether you decide to download music or not. But don't get too attached-- Eminem may stop it yet. -_-

well tons of people use limewire. When you download a song, they will say 'this is copyrighted, continue or cancel'. That is for most of their songs. Just continue on. The same was with Morpheus before they shut down adn the same with Kazaa... now Limewire is hot until they get shut down

downloading from anywhere..including limewire is illegal. but i wouldnt worrya bout it. it is hard for the server to track where what song was being downloaded because people do it so much. no worries ;)

well technially its illegal since you can find the copywrited material on there cause once you download the song or whatever you won't need to buy the CD which is taking money from the artist. but if you must i guess sure why not. but just remember that there are viruses and stuff

They are covering their butts. It is illegal to download and burn to a CD ANY song that you have not paid money for.

Well, if it's illegal, then I should be in prison by now! I wouldn't worry about it.
