I have heard from parents that some teachers are fierce..so children do not dare to ask if something happens or when they have a question. I have heard that some teachers are fierce...some children dread going to their classes. However, if you are not fierce, they climb over your head, they take advantage of you. I have kids telling me, teacher, you are not fierce, that's why we are noisy. "I can be very fierce if I want," I replied. Guess what I heard..
"No, we hate fierce people!"

I am assuming that you are talking about an atmosphere that would be conducive to learning. It that is the case I would recommend that you investigate the teaching methods and required conduct of parochial schools. I don't know if it is true today but 40 to 50 years ago it was the best thing going. Miles ahead of public education. I suspect it is the same today.

I attended both public and private schools. I am not promoting The Catholic Religion. I am not a Catholic. However in the two years I attended Catholic Schools I learned more than I did in the other 10 years in Public Schools. I would venture to say it would also include 4 years of college.

The reason I think would be, first and foremost discipline was demanded. Respect was commanded. In addition to that , it was a mind set that the student was there to learn. Not to put in time. The result was perfection.

The sisters were not fierce. Simply put, they meat what they said and meant what they said. No ifs ands or buts Yes it was hard. Nevertheless it was truly worth it.

They were able to accomplish what they did because there was no intervention from parents or the government. It was, "Their way or the hiway.

Children's wants were not part of the program.

I can understand where you're comin' from. I'm a young teacher and I look young too. I'm usually the youngest in the workplace. The students pick up on this and how colleagues may react to you. You do have to be "fierce" sometimes 'cause they will try to walk all over you (students that is). I've had that lack of "fierceness" plague me since student teaching, but I'm taking it all in stride. I try to toughen up when I can, but I'm not gonna get stressed over it.

I am not fierce. I find that if you truly care about your students and show that you are a person with feelings they will respond well. At the beginning of the year I tell my students what my life is like, I have 2 kids a husband etc. As I show that I am interested in their lives, they show that they are interested in mine. I am still the authority in the class, but I find that I do not have to use it ofter (usually).

I don't think all teachers are fierce. Where do you teach? I have been teaching for ten years. I am strict and run a tight ship. But I am not fierce. Of course, it depends on your circumstances too.

I prefer when my teachers are fierce, this means i get the grade I deserve because im not going to be "babied" ("thats ok hunny, its late but that ok") when I get into college or real world.

Students appreciate a combination of discipline and love. Be strict with your classroom rules, but get to know them and let them know you care for them, tell jokes. Set limits.

Not all teachers have to be mean. However if your class is acting up then you need to set the guidelines. If you do this then they should respect you, not fear you
