Here is how far we have been able to get.
Problem: 8x+2y=13 & 4x+y11
Solution:
Y=11-4x
8x+2(11-4x)=13
8x+22-8x=13
Now I'm stuck, what do we do with 8x-8x?
thanks for your help.

Many thanks to all of you for responding. I apologize for my poor illustration of the question.
Despite my poorly worded question I believe Charles provided the answer we needed (or lack there of).
It's nice to have so many responses in a short period time!

In geometrical terms, the lines are parallel, and you're asking where they cross one another. The answer (geometrically) is "no where." Algebraically, the answer is "no solution."
Two lines (in two-space, or with two variables) are parallel if the ratio of the coefficients on their x and y coordinates are equal. For instance, in your problem, 8/2=4/1, so the lines are parallel.

is there meant to be an equivalent sign after the Y indoors the 2nd equation? first equation: 8x = 13 - 2y 2nd equation: 4x = 11 - y multiply the two factors via skill of two 8x = 22 - 2y now 22-2y = 13-2y which ultimately finally ends up indoors an comparable end result you had, that is impossible (22 does no longer equivalent 13). is there a typo someplace?

is there supposed to be an equal sign after the Y in the second equation?
first equation:
8x = 13 - 2y
second equation:
4x = 11 - y
multiply both sides by 2
8x = 22 - 2y
now 22-2y = 13-2y
which leads to the same end result you had, which is impossible (22 does not equal 13). is there a typo somewhere?

The "no solution" answers you have above are correct. Just to flesh it out a bit: with problems like this, there are two "odd" answers you might get. If you get something like this (13 = 22) which is impossible, it means (as has been said) that there is no solution. Geometrically, that means the lines are parallel. If you get something like 3 = 3, that means that the two equations are actually the same thing, so any x,y pair that solves one will solve the other. Geometrically, it means the lines are concurrent, i.e. it's the same line.

8x + 2y = 13 & 4x + 11y
8x + 2(11-4x) = 13
8x + 22 - 8x = 13
8x - 8x = -9
x= -9
i think thats it but its hard to tell because the problem isnt explained well enough, i hope this helps, if it doesnt, im sorry

8x+2y=13
4x+y=11
multiply last one by two
8x+2y=13
8x+2y=11
11 doesn't equal 13
No solution

There is no real solution because the x's cancel each other out and the y's cancel each other out.
