My check engine light is on. I asked another question about why the light might be on (which, PLEASE answer that one if you have any ideas- I need your help really bad) and one of the answers was to take it to the dealer and have them plug something into the van's computer and it would say why the light is on. I was hoping someone knew if they would charge me for this. Thank you!

take the vehicle to the auto parts store. Ask them to hook up their OBD Gauge (On Board Diagnostics Gauge) to it. They can help you diagnose

Most likely they will charge you unless they find the problem is something that is warranty related.

Places like auto zone can pull the codes for you but remember that knowing the code is not the same thing as diagnosing the problem. Most codes just tell you a system that is having problems or is giving a out of spec reading (the computer cannot tell the difference between a bad part and a good part that has been unplugged or has a wiring problem). That is where the experience and ability to check the system from a dealer or independent shop can save you money and hassle (besides buying parts you might not need).

Your best bet is to call the dealer and ask them because they are the only one who can answer this question definitely for you. You can also try a couple of shops nearby and compare.

Maybe, maybe not. How is your rapport with the service department you are going to? Do you go there regularly for routine maintenance?

I don't have a Chevy, but a Subaru. My check engine light came on, so I went to have it checked, and they didn't charge me anything. Since I take my car there regularly for service, they know me and they want to keep my business. It's the dealership where I bought my car and my husband bought his car. This is hands down the best service department I've ever been to. Keeping me happy keeps my business and keeps me coming back.

The check engine light could be any number of things, even as small as a loose gas cap (which they tightened and still didn't charge me).

I'm pretty sure they will charge you unless your vehicle is still under warranty. I would be sure to ask prior to the diagnosis. I have heard that if you have had the oil changed and a tune up that sometimes you have to completely unhook the battery and then hook it back up to reset the check engine light. Don't know if it will work but I guess it's worth a try. Good luck.

Yeah they will charge you. It is probably cheaper to pull the bulb. I have the same problem with my Caddy. Was told it would cost me upwards to 4500.00 to check out the computer for the reasons that might be that the cause the check engine light was on. As far as I can tell with all the maintenance I keep on the car there is nothing wrong except the light.

Yes they will charge you what is equal to 1 hour labor....
in the midwest it's anywhere between 90.00 to 120.00.
take your vehicle to your local "Auto Zone" parts store where they will hook up a diagnostic tool free of charge.they will give you a print out with the codes that your power control module has stored.call your local dealer's service dept.and ask them what system those codes are from.this will make you more knowledgeable when dealing with a repair facility.....

YOU COULD TAKE IT TO AUTOZONE BUT ALOT OF THE TIMES THE COULD NOT LOOK TO SEE WHY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON, ALOT OF THE TIME THE CUSTOMER THINKS IT IS A MAJIC WAND AND IT WILL TELL YOU ANYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW. TAKE IT THE THE DEALERSHIP EVEN IF IT YOU NOT UNDER WARRANTY, ALOT OF TIMES IT CAN BE ELECTRICAL PROBELM AND THE SCANNER WILL TELL YOU IT IS A SENSOR. IF YOU WANT IT FIXED RIGHT WITHOUT THROWING ANYPARTS AT IT HOPING IT WILL FIX IT TAKE IT TO THE DEALER AND ALOT OF TIMES IT WILL BE CHEAPER

If the vehicle is still under warranty they will not charge you. If it is out of warranty they will charge you, usually around 35.00 to 75.00 depending on the shop. Good Luck

Yes they will unless it's still undre factory warrantee. If it turns out to be caused by the emissions system and it has less than 80,000 miles they should not charge you. I'd get it fixed anyway.
