Hellen Keller did not get dumb. If you ask me, I would consider her smart after the things she accomplished after she became blind and deaf.
And it hasn't been proven what caused her blindness and deafness. Some say it was scarlet fever and some say it was meningitis.
OK, sorry about that. I have actually never head of muteness being called dumb before. Now I learned something new!

Yes, Helen Keller's blindness and deafness was caused by scarlet fever--one of several diseases (including smallpox and rheumatic fever) that can destroy vision and/or hearing--though I don't know the exact symptomology.
In this, HK was much like her predecessor, Laura Bridgeman--a young girl whose vision and hearing were also destroyed around 1830 by scarlet fever. She is particularly important because she was the first deaf/blind person to learn to communicate (via the touch code Ann Sullivan taught to Keller). That was the result of the efforts and ingenuity of Samuel Gridley Howe (head of the first school for the blind in the US) and was the inspiration for Anne Sullivan to teache Helen Keller.

Helen Keller was not mute. Before she became ill with scarlet fever, she was a very precocious baby who was already learning to speak.
Once Annie Sullivan got through to her and began to make progress, the old memories of speaking began to emerge and that is how she was able to learn to speak (which she did EXTREMELY well, btw). Hence the famous scene in the play at the water pump "wa wa". Very dramatic, of course, but based on fact.

History says that she did. Scarlet fever is called that because, the skin becomes red due to the temp of the fever, generally over 103 deg F. Anything over 101 deg F is considered dangerous and anything over 103 can be lethal. The human brain begins to cook at 103, this can cause brain damage and depending on which section of the brain gets cooked all sorts of funtioning can be stunted or stoped. In Ms. Kellers case the centers for speech and sight were cooked.

The scarlett fever damaged her sight and hearing. She was not really a mute. She was unable to talk intelligibly because she could not hear the appropriate sounds in order to imitate them.
