Would annexing the phillippines be compatible with basic american ideals of democracy and self-government?

Arguments for the yes side of this would be nice please. I'm not saying that that is my veiw necessairly but that is the view that my teacher wants us to argue.

Here is what i have so far...America is about protecting people’s right for life, liberty, and the persuit of happiness. By annexing a nation such as the phillippines we are upholding our ideas because we are granting the people of the country these basic rights with our proven system of democracy.

And we must pretend that it is 1898.

I could not answer yo directly but if you have a deck of cards, a ruling diamonds and spade... could be equal to the ruling clubs and hearts?

As for me of my reply to my own question is of not... but we could take the whole deck of cards to go along with the play.
