I have always wanted to open a thrift store ...but ,I have NO idea where to start....I have been ALL over the computer and I still feel like I'm going in circles. Does anyone know what has to be done to start a business... and can anyone tell me how to get items to put in my store once I do start it....besides the obvious...yard sales, family and friends,auctions...... I just need all the help I can get. Thanks and have a great week!

There is a very successful thrift shop near my hometown and they don't have to buy stock....it comes to them in the form of consignments. They rent an older store in a charming part of town and have had to become very selective about what they accept on consignment since there are always eager people wanting to sell their good cast-offs. They charge 20% commission on each sale and the store is always overflowing with customers and merchandise. Some of my favorite pieces came from there and at a considerably lower price than if I'd purchased retail.

First thing to do is to take a small business class at your local college. Trust me, the cost of this class will save you tons of money in the long run. Most importantly, it will help you develop a business plan. Or you can go to the library and start checking out books about how to write a business plan. Most small business owners fold in two years because they don't have a plan. Your business plan will help you figure out how much space you need, if you should rent or buy your building, necessary insurance (liability), the number of workers you need, etc. Good luck
