I am a high school student and I have been considering what I want to major in during college. I have many options but the 3 that stand out the most are english arts, pyschology, and teaching. I was kind of wondering what I can do to pursue these options. Personally if you have any tips on which one I should major in and/or what kind of pay and jobs do pyschologists have?

If you want to complete just a bachelor's degree, I would suggest you take an English major along with the education courses necessary for teacher certification. It is not usually easy to get a professional type of job in the field of psychology if you have only a bachelor's degree. There are lots of openings for English teachers.

The following web site lists jobs that would likely be available to an individiual with a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in psychology.

You will find an audio presentation on careers in psychology at this site:

If you can find specific careers that interest you, you can look up the training and education needed, earnings, expected job prospects, what workers do on the job, and working conditions in the Occupational Outlook Handbook, which is published by the U.S. Department of Labor. There are no jobs for a degree in pyschology unless you go further study to specifize in clinical area and be a psychologist. To be a psychologist, it usually takes a minimum of 7 years.

Well, ask yourself, what are your real interests? You should do something that you really enjoy working with than considering the pay and benefits. If the pay is your major concern, then obviously english literature could be a good option for you. There are many ways you can work in with a degree in english. Teacher, writer, editor, translator, marketing, or copywriter etc.

2 years you have to earn the required credits 3rd yr pick a major Take psych as an elective and art if possible. If you pick psychology you will need graduate school to get a good job in the field. If you pick education as a major and minor in psychology you can teach. Then if you want to at a later time you can get a degree in school counseling at night school and then move into doing that in the education system. This is an advantage as some of the cost is re reimbursed to you and you don't build up a huge debt. I have a M.A. in vocational counseling. I can teach at junior college and do school counseling with it.

to be a psychologist you'll have to first go to college and major in psychology. then you'll have to go to graduate school for 4-6 years to get a graduate degree in psychology. then you will have to pass a licensing exam to become certified as a psychologist. if you want to work with patients, you'll have to have a doctoral degree in clinical psychology. most clinical psychology phd and psyd programs are harder to get into than medical schools (the average acceptance rate is around 2-6%).

if you want to be a therapist but don't want to spend so much time in school, you could get a masters degree in social work instead. that would only be a 2 year program and is easier to get into.

if you don't want to go to graduate school at all then psychology is still an interesting major, but realistically there is very little that you can do with only an undergraduate degree and any job that you would be able to get would not let you advance at all in the field until going to graduate school

The simple answer is that you will need to reach your own decision. Teachers have excellent job security, but very long hours. "English arts" have a variety of aplications ranging from journalism to business. Psychology Majors are limited to low paying social work at the undergraduate level. At the graduate level (master/doctorite) you can expect better pay depending which type of graduate major you persue. Some of the graduate programs range from medicine and neurology, to social psychology. Good Luck.

There are no well paying jobs for people with a Bachelor's degree in psychology. You will most likely have to go on to get your master's degree. There are several options (clinical psychology, school psychology, ect..) And if you're feeling energetic...you can get your doctorate!

So if you do major in Psych, be prepared to go to Graduate School after College
