what can you multiply to get the last number, 1? well only 1 * 1 right? but the middle number is negative again.
so the two factors will look like (#y - 1) (#y - 1).
then to get 8 from 8y^2 you can do 8 * 1, 4 * 2
so now try them out. you have 4 things to try. 8, 1; 4, 2; 2, 4; 1, 8;
BUT since the -1 and -1 are the same, 8, 1 will be the same as 1, 8 and same for 2/4. so you really only have 2 things to try: 1, 8 and 2, 4. let's see.
(8y - 1)(1y - 1) = 8y^2 - 9y + 1 and we were right the first time!

There is a formula to solve a 2nd degree equation ay^2 +by+c=0

y= ((-b+-sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/2a

In this case y = ((9 +-sqrt(81-32))/16 y= (9+7)/16=1

y=(9-7)/16 = 1/8
