There was a tornado in Miami in 1997. I know I saw it as part of a special on The Weather Channel. It stuck with me because I remember a bus driver holding on for dear life when it hit. It was an F1. You need to check out the site below - AWESOME pictures.

No, they don't happen often. Waterspouts are more prevalent - tornadoes that form over water. I watched one a few years back in Destin as it formed and then moved slowly to the beach where it died pretty quick. Though I live in a state where there can be quite a few, that was the first time I ever saw any up close and personal. Beautiful.

I remember hearing about the one that hit downtown in 1997, but other than that, I've never heard of one hitting anywhere near Miami. I remember hearing that there was a waterspout that came ashore over Aventura earlier this fall. There aren't that many waterspouts up this way, most of them are down in the Keys. But like everybody else has been saying, it's mostly hurricanes in Miami. 2005 was a pretty bad year for hurricanes, there were parts of Miami that didn't have power for over a month after Wilma came through in October.

there are tornadoes everywhere, some places are rarer than others. hurricanes seem to me more prominent in Miami though. I wouldn't rule out the occasional tornado though, it does happen. And hurricanes can cause tornadoes too.
