Here's something that will help you: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=16&cat=1988&articleid=2386

Calcium, iodine, strontioum, & magnesium are the most important. The best thing is to use a quality (not the cheapest) salt mix and keep up with weekly water changes to replenish the elements!

The protein skimmer removes organic compounds (protein, amino acids, sugars) from wastes and food - the stuff that contributes to ammonia and nitrates. It will remove iodine and other inorganic substances if they are bound to organic ones:

I run my skimmer pretty much all day - I will turn it off while I'm feeding for about 30 minutes - and haven't had any problems, even with high-iodine consumers (like Xenia polyps) in the tank.

yes this is true, but i skim alot.just replace what is lost.Where I work we use "REEF DNA ".Just read the package and make sure it is what your corals need,no extras that can cause a spike in your parameters. This product is only to be given 2 times a week. And that's great as it costs about 25.00 to 30.00 wholesale and we sell it for 69.99.Shop and read my best advise.Happy Reefing!
