why are they all crazy?

If you listened to that all the time you would be crazy too! Not really of course. Two things tho - first there were a lot more classical musicians than we have any name recognition at all. Over all I doubt there insanity rate was particularly high. And second - If it was higher try comparing it to rock musicians of different genres today. The suicide rate seems higher than the population at large. The drug and crime rates also seem higher. But how many million wannabe rock stars are out there holding down a day job and getting through the daily grind of life?

Actually, I think it applies to most incredibly brilliant people. The people that we know and listen to as classical musicians are "the best of the best" of their era- their genius was so profound that it lived for centuries. Look at brilliant writers like Poe; or inventors like Leonardo.

Genius and insanity walk hand in hand.

That's a good point. Some people say rock music is satanic and of the devil , but it's the classical musicians who are going crazy with demon possession.

It's the same with most geniuses, regardless of their field of expertese.

It's an interresting phenomenon that brilliant musicians, mathematicians and artists are so frequently out of social touch.

There is a fine line between genius and insanity. I've lived on the lunatic fringe my whole life. I wouldn't trade it for the world!

I don't believe they were crazy, didn't they have disabilities?... some had learning problems, asperger's syndrome, some wear deaf, etc..

they just learned how to overcome it. and they see/heard things that normal people never noticed.
