How about just because they're on fixed incomes and it's an effort for them to get to the place that serves coffee? Elderly people tend to make very loyal and well-behaved customers when they're treated nicely; that's why these discounts are offered. Don't worry--you'll get yours eventually if you live right and have good luck.

While you are at it why not abolish free seats for infants on air planes. They should have to pay for their ticket like everyone else. What about discount tickets for children at parks, amusement parks and movie theaters. I think that you need to give this a little more thought.

It's coffee for god sakes. It's a necessity. How would you like it if you were on fixed income and they charge you a lot. There has to be a compromise that you are willing to make for old folgs.
