For the simple reason that it's much harder to portray a character without being able to rely on speech. Try explaining something simple to a friend without saying or writing anything, and you'll see just how difficult it can be. It's even worse in live theatre, where you can't rely on facial expressions at all and have to stick with body language.

The actor clearly is portraying what a mute person would do in real life (yes, even a simple facial expression can convince an audience). The true talent of these actors is their ability to show this behind the tiny lense of the camera but still make it explode on screen. If portrayed correctly, the character will across as heartbreaking and poignant.

There's way more to acting than memorizing lines.

Watch The Miracle Worker, Melissa Gilbert had no lines, as she played a deaf mute, but her performace was outstanding.

Acting is more than just memorizing and saying the lines. It is conveying emotion to others with body language something that you don't have to speak to do.

I think its has something to do with their ability to make us think they're mute. Acting isnt all about the lines....

They might beconvincing because they acted natural.
