The sport gets more expensive the better you get for many reasons as in many other sports. The better you get the more time you need to practice so you pay for more hours in that gym, if you get much better you pay more for more experienced and better coaches. The risk of injury is increased with time put in that wears on the body and possibility traumatic injuries may occur so doctors visits are happening all the time and that can be a huge cost. Also grips and other braces for higher more difficult skills, and lastly meet costs and travel costs once you start to compete. People continue because just like any other sport you can choose to pay the price of getting better or not and some feel that it is completely worth it.

In some respect it might get more expensive. Often the better a gymnast becomes, the more time they spend in the gym practicing and might have to pay more for longer lessons or a competition team compared to a recreational lesson. Also, leotards are expensive to buy.

It does. I'm not on a very high level, but there are lots of things that cost more and more money...
leotards-you will need higher quality ones
handgrips and wristbands-can cost over $55
classes-one of my classes is two hours and costs $215
coaches-especially if you are on a high level, coaching will be one of your biggest costs.
doctor visits, physical therapy, other medical stuff-when gymnasts work out a lot, they get lots of injuries (dislocated shoulders, broken bones, sprains, hyper extensions), some of which are very serious, and you will usually have to pay for medical care

that's not really true but even if it were, isn't it the same for many other sports?

and your quest to do better or to top your sport shouldn't be hampered just because of finances.
