~James Polk tried to buy Cuba. Spain refused to sell. The American Civil war intervened. Thereafter, Cuba revolted. Marti was killed. Spain won. The US symathized with Cuban independence and surruptitiously fomented rebelion. Spain offered home rule. Cuba refused. The Maine blew up in Havana. Uncle Sam blame Spain and declared war. Spain lost. The US took Cuba as spoils of war but instead of annexing it, made it a trusteeship under McKinley. McKinley was assassinated. Teddy Roosevelt terminated the trusteeship and granted Cuba independence. Independence was contingent on the US being able to run Cuba's financial and foreign affairs, and taking (leasing in perpetuity) Guantanamo Bay.

June 12 , 1898 was the declaration of philippine Indipendence under the Spanish era..., to tell you frankly Spain never lost to America, Spain sold Philippines to America $20M if i'm not mistaken, the war was just a show making filipinos think they are already free. Their appears the "Treaty of paris" in which indicates that philippines is now under American so America never win against Spain They bought their victory

The only thing I would add to what you've read above is that the sinking of the Maine, which was assumed to have been the work of Spain, has recently been determined to have been the work of - I kid you not - explosive horse sh**. Horses holed up in the cargo area below did their business, but their poops were not scooped on a regular basis. Therefore, methane gas developed and eventually exploded. It would then be correct to say that this war was fought for sh__tty reasons!

Basically the Spanish-American war shouldn't have happened. Spain did not want to fight us, they were getting "old" and weaker. We were a young country and we were ready to become imperialists, just like England.
The sinking of the American ship "Maine" was the cause of the war. Yellow Journalists- William Randolph Hurst and Joseph Pulitzer claimed that "Maine" was sunk by the Spanish, although now it has been determined that Maine probably went down because of an oil leak. Hurst and Pulitzer would write up papers claiming to "Remember the Maine!" because it was horrible what the Spanish "did" to our ship. The papers created outcries among many US citizens, thus prompting Pres. McKinley to suggest to Congress to go to war.
