..... or tried to push them over?

I think of this question and immediately think of someone trying to commit suicide. Or, homicide!
Well, I will look at it from another angle.

I have tried to talk people off the ledge in my lifetime. Only not in the form of actually saving their life. More like trying to help them from making a bad choice. Many of my friends, myself included, have been exposed to some very bad things. See, we have many choices to make in life. Sometimes we can't see the good choice apart from the wrong choice. That is when it is good to have an outside perspective. I have detered many friends of mine to not drive after they have had one too many to drink. I have helped a friend mend a marriage when he thought there was no way out except divorce. I have helped a friend turn down some hard drugs and lead a clean and productive life. Is all these things talking someone off of the ledge? I believe it is. If I had not intervened, would they still be the great people they are today, or would they even be here today? No one knows. But they are still here, and that is what counts.

I have tried to push some people over the ledge as well. Now keep in mind, this was for their best interest as well. Sometimes it is ok to push them. Especially if they have a fully functional parachute attached to them. See, some people need a push to jump start their life or career. I can give you two examples of friends of mine who would have never met their spouse had it not been for me urging them on to talk to the "stranger" that looks hot. Another friend I have encouraged to take his chance and move to a different town and state to persue his dream. He was skeptical of leaving all of his family and friends behind. He needed a push to get him moving in the right direction and become succesful. He is now the richest person I know and is only 30 yrs. old. Oh, and his family is totally thrilled at his succes and would not have wanted it any other way.

To sum up, I have done both and I believe they have had huge impacts on many peoples lives. Sometimes it is good to think outside the box.

I am on the ledge talking to myself now. I will let you know later if I was a smooth talker or just plain pushy.

I am still here. Talked myself right off the ledge. Dang I'm good!

actually... one time. and i 'd not wish the experience on myself or anyone else ever again. an acquaintance my freshman year of college was preoccupied with death (a good friend of his had recently taken his life) and at times talked of suicide. my mind was full of questions... doubts... was this a plea for help or an attention-getting device?

one night he came to the lounge in the dormitory we were staying at feeling exceptionally down. finally he broke out that tonight he meant to end it all. my roommate and i stood there mouths open, not knowing what to do. we got him to his room, and i dialed a suicide prevention hotline and held out the phone to him. basically i panicked and didn't know WHAT to do.

he didn't take the phone, but either the fact that he now knew there were resources available, or that people cared about him, one of the two seemed to get him 'away from the ledge'. last i heard he was still around, got a good job at the post office.

I would of course try to talk them off the ledge. Unless, of course, my name was in the will.

*!*

I pulled her close and didn't let go for many hours... I'll never forget that night. I have never prayed so much for the sun to come up as I did then.

You never know what is inside a person until they are broken, and even then I'm sure there is still some things we will never understand...
