Back to back, a flip is legal. There are different rules about how much you can glide into the wall depending on the league but the majority state that you must begin your flip before your stroke hand is at your side.
Back to breast is a different story -- No flip. Rarely will you see someone use a bucket turn any more but a modified bucket / flip is gaining more ground. It involves exaggerating the shoulder role on your last turn until you are nearly vertical, and flipping nearly sideways. Difficult to perform legally but much faster than the other, much more common spinning on your back (a technical term, obviously).

There are some rules and regulations but if you swim on swim team they apparently want you to go as fast as you can so I would highly recommend a flip turn as they are the fastest, and most efficent, if you know how to do them correctly, anyhow your swimming your stroke, once you see the flags and this takes a few practice runs but count the number of strokes it takes you to get to about the T or the area where you have enough room to flip, and you flip over, take ONE freestyle stroke, and if you happen to turn to early, just keep on kicking them do your flip, and if you miss the wall and dont touch, it may slow you down but go back an touch otherwise you get disqualified, and once you flip you want to pretend the wall is so hott if you stay on too long you will burn your feet because you want to spend as little time on the wall as possible, so dont bend your knees more hten a 90 degree angle, and push off really hard and do a few long hard butterfly kicks and try to get as much of the pool covered underwater as possible, as it helps you, so good luck.

Rule SW 6.4 states that "...when executing the turn there must be a touch of the wall with some part of the swimmer's body. During the turn the shoulders may be turned over the vertical to the breast after which a continuous single arm pull or a continuous simultaneous double arm pull may be used to initiate the turn. The swimmer must have returned to the position on the back upon leaving the wall."
Every meet you'll ever attend recognizes this rule.

Well what do you consider a bucket turn, are you talking about the type of turn you use for butterfly and breaststroke cause if it is.... freestyle and backstroke you can do either a bucket turn or flip turn.

before the wall there should be a series of flags accomplishing in the course of the pool. If there is not then your pool needs some extremely undesirable. count number the style of strokes it takes to attain the wall. Take that huge style and subtract one from it. it really is your stroke count number. As you swim backstroke, once you spot the flags count number your stroke count number and turn over onto your abdomen. the reason you had to subtract one stroke out of your unique count number is because once you turn your stroking arm ought to propel you ahead because the perfect stroke before the turn. once you're too far discover your stroke account again or use more effective strokes. once you're too far throughout the time of a race then decide on the flow till you're close adequate to the wall. Kicking receives you disqualified in u . s . a . swimming, and too a lot kicking in league meets ought to too. one better element: verify you at the instantaneous are not too on the fringe of the wall. If throughout the time of your flipturn your legs are squished antagonistic to the wall that grant you with a susceptible turn. save on attempting to hit upon a stroke count number that matches you, the position you at the instantaneous are not too far or too close from the wall. it really is needed that you're tender.

I was under the impression that only flip turns are legal for back-back, but maybe I am not correct. They are much more time efficient anyhow.
