In any technical, engineering or scientific work, algebra is essential. These guys use it often, every day.
You wouldn't get your mobile phone, Internet, satnav, satellite TV, etc etc without a lot of people working with algebra.

What they say is true: you are never ever going to actually use this stuff in real life. However, that's not the purpose of algebra. The true purpose of algebra is an exercise in analytical thinking. It teaches you to observe a problem, break it down to it's simplest parts, and solve it using the rules at hand. A necessary skill to have, that.

It's the ability to figure out problems when you don't necessarily have all the information.
And contrary to popular belief, you will use it later in life. All the time. Especially if you have a craft, are a skilled tradesman, a scientist or businessman.
However, it doesn't take algebra to ask if someone wants fries with their Happy Meal.
