If i set my thermostat to heat my house to 70 at 6 AM, does it kick on at say 545 to bring up the temp, or just kick on at 6 and run until it reaches 70? I know there are thermostats that work that way, but I am not sure if thats the default, or if it just depends on the model.

It certainly does depend upon the model. Some come on at the programmed time, while others are said to take into consideration the ambient temperature and a few other not so concrete considerations to turn on the furnace at the proper time so that the area is up to the desired temperature at the set time. On the other side of the cycle, some of these devices will take into consideration the time it takes the fan to cool down the plenum and shut off the gas so that the temperature of the heated area does not overheat by more than one or two degrees.

No, it kicks furnace on at 6 AM . Its a clock in there and it has a "switch' you set to activate the furnace onto RUN at a preset higher temp than the night temp.

Be sure you set the clock correctly to match the right time of day.

Most of them would just turn on at the time set and pump out heat until the temperature specified is reached.

I am sure you could get units that operate as you suggest though - although i would imagine they are specialty items for use in medical or lab conditions. Your average domestic heater wouldn't be so sophisticated.
