We were out with a group of people, and I was really really really hungry. I was so hungry that I could feel like my stomach eating itself- no kidding, I mean I was like dieing. Everyone wanted to get Asian food, so we did. They could all use chop sticks, but I can't...its something I struggle with, because I don't have good manual dexterity. I didn't eat because I didn't want to look ignorant in the group, most of which I was only fairly acquainted with. She got very angry with me later, which I don't entirely understand. She acted like I had done something to embarrass her. I feel this is wrong of her, what do you think?

I'm very observant and keen- I did not see any subtle reactions this could have caused or anything of the sort. I just politely said I wasn't hungry and it went over smoothly.

Did she get angry because you weren't willing to look ignorant in the group? I think I would find it very anoying to imagine that you would allow yourself to be hungry when all you had to look was adventerous. But really, that was totally your choice to make. It was your value system that said being hungry is better than looking silly. That's your value system. It shouldn't anger her, because you hurt no one, but it apparently taught her something about you that disappointed her.

The only way I could see that you would have done something wrong is if the other people in the group had higher status than you (like were parents or bosses or somesuch) AND had invited you to this dinner, as opposed to you all being equals and going somewhere together.

I think she was out of line. Did she ever ask you if you knew how to use chopsticks or if you were feeling OK? She should never have gotten angry with you. And if she did get upset with you, she should have at least explained why and given you a chance to talk with her about it. You shouldn't have to conform to both her and friends, be comfortable enough to just eat with a fork. Tons of people do. Hope that helps. =)

well first off tell her to get over herself...just because she can use chop sticks, don't mean everyone can...you should have just grabbed a fork and tucked in to the food if you were that hungry....don't feel bad because she had her knickers in a twist....she should value her friends for who they are or she will end up friendless...who cares if you couldnt use chop sticks...you sould have used your fingers and really wound her up....

who cares, eat with a fork. its more embarresing to sit with a group of people who are eating and not eat than to use a fork when every one else is using chopsticks. so no that was not wrong of her but she should have had a little more concern for why you werent eating with everyone else.

Actually, maybe you should have asked for a fork. There's nothing wrong with having low proficiency in the use of chopsticks.

I don't think she should be angry but if you had simply asked for a knife and fork, the whole thing could have been avoided.

she might've been mad because you might've seemed ignorant for not being able to..... i can't really see why she would be mad, that seems like something stupid to get angry over. you should've just asked for a fork. or tried the chopsticks and looked cute when you couldn't do it for your life!
