In October, 1998, Warner Bros. purchased the film rights to the first two novels for a seven-figure sum.[14] A film version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was released on November 16, 2001 and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on November 15, 2002.[14] Both were directed by Chris Columbus.[30][31] The June 4, 2004 film version of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was directed by Alfonso Cuarón.[32][14] The fourth film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, was directed by yet another new director, Mike Newell. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, is still in production and will be premiered sometimes in 2007. The Half Blood Prince is also still in production and won't be viewed until 2008. The last book may not even start production before 2010. These movies are now in production, under British television director David Yates, and new screenwriter Michael Goldenberg, projected for release on July 13, 2007.[33][34]

"The release date for Deathly Hallows has not been set by the publisher. However, Liz Calder, a publishing director at Bloomsbury Publishing Plc. said in May 2006 that she hopes the seventh book will be released in 2007, even going so far as to say it is "likely."

So far six have been published. The names are: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (later changed to Sorcerer's Stone), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in order of publication. So far, only the first four have been made into movies. The next movie is coming out in July. They have not announced when the next and final book is coming out.
