I am currently enrolled at Penn State University and am a first year student. During my first semester (last semester) I applied to transfer to the University of Maryland for the next semester (this semester). I applied way back in Oct. and constantly called in to check my status starting in the December. I received no luck as I kept on calling needing to get an answer before I had to go back to school. Finally I did not get an answer till Jan 25 and I was accepted but by that time I had been in school for several weeks already! If I leave now then I would have to pay 40% of Penn State's out of state tuition and my room and board for the rest of the year here on top of the MD tuition. I also have started all my classes and am halfway through a significant group project. I would also not have time to ease into the transition, get the classes I'd need or have a place to live nearby. I wrote them a letter and they said they needed to review it with a commitee. Would theydefer me

Have you called UM? They would be the perfect people to ask. But I do think you can defer your enrollment/matriculation with permission. But, YOU need to contact them.

If you are talking about Med School, they will probably require you to reapply when you are ready to make your move, because Med School is such a competitive environment.

If you are talking about regular university level, they ill probably defer you.
