In a small commune with limited size and goals, sure. In a significant country, no. "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs" sounds good until one gets into the details, like how those are determined, and by whom, and if there's any excess (unlikely given the limited profit motive) how is the excess distributed? Plus central planning certainly is too cumbersome without market feedback in adjusting productivity.

NO! It would require everyone to accept the same responsibilities in life. One word; Greed. The greedy, wealth and power desiring people will always try to rise above the average. Welcome to america! The desire to make money by giving people money to spend is what creates the most stable economy, which is why most communist countries are so poor.
