No. I was brought up to either do something the right way or don't do it at all. Self-satisfaction in your work is the greatest reward.

I like it best when the effort is the reward, but sometimes that doesn't work and the reward must be worth the effort (and therefore what the reward is worth to me determines the effort I put into getting it).

The reward "should" determine the effort. It doesn't always happen that way.
I've seen kids rewarded for "leaving someone alone" or "keeping their mouths shut". What does that teach......

Sometimes. We are all motivated by reward to some extent, whether it is money, compliment or the reward we feel inside ourselves.
