You would have to be hiking where there is Cell Phone service. Check the providers in your area. T-Mobile shows a detailed map of signal strength on their maps..

When you have selected a Cell Phone provider, then look for their Laptop PC Card adapter for wireless internet service.

Ahhh, let's see. Isn't the whole point to see nature and be away from it? (Otherwise, you might find yourself in a cell adjacent to Ted Kozinski)

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Get yourself an Aircard. It's a pcmcia card that slides into your laptop and connects you to the internet using cellular frequencies. I'm on one right now, I'm sitting in my 18 wheeler in Jackson, MS, unconnected to anything. Most of the major cell providers offer it, mine's through Cingular. I paid $99 for the Sierra Wireless 860, and I pay $60 a month for unlimited access. It's way faster than dialup, works nearly everywhere, and in major markets I get broadband speeds. Sprint gets broadband nearly everywhere, with a similar price in service.

Using a cell phone is fine near urbanized areas or along highways, bot if you are talking about places like Yellowstone or the Tetons, you will need one of those 12 inch wide satellite dishes and a good battery pack.

Maybe if there's a city wide wi-fi that reaches wherever you are. You can also get a broadband card from your cell phone provider. The problem with that though is that if your phone doesn't get service where you are neither will your broadband card. Ask your cell phone provider where you can go and still get access.

well the only possible way is that you use a cell phone which you have to have some kind of plan with your service provider

but i dont think your cell phone would be working on hiking trips:)

Wireless internet can be found just about anywhere these days, so it shouldn't be a problem. However, if you have a weak wireless card think about investing in a strong one, but if you have a strong one, dont worry.

If you have an internet card provided by your cell phone provider, which will let you access the internet via your cell. or if you can find a hotspot out there ...maybe in an hotel you're staying in ?
