HID is High Intensity Discharge, Xenon is the gas used in HID bulbs.

The color is actually done by "Temperature" The temperature is in Kelvins. Different manufacturers call different colors different things. This is a general description of the colors.

Remember that this is a "guideline" and Manufacturer A's 8000K color doesn't have to match Manufacturer B's 8000k. Although you wouldn't be able to tell unless you put them next to each other.

3000k - Yellow
4300k - White
6000k - White (slight blue tint -- this is the default)
8000k - White (more blue)
10000k - White (even more blue)
12000k - Blue (with a hint of white)
12000k+ Blue -> Purple area
