Why in the world would you burn Balsa Wood? It's one of the most expensive hard woods around. Yep it's a hard wood; has to do with leafs.

Try this: Sell the Balsa Wood to a Hobbyist, and then use the money to buy fire wood.

Only the smell of big money going up the chimney but if your cold and freezing I would break up a chair or some other wooden made object to throw on top of the balsa wood as it burns pretty fast

I don't know of any bad effects, but then I haven't burned a lot of it either as where I'm from it is quite expensive and only sold in small sizes. But it is just wood and should be ok.
