They tried to escape (and still do) because they were and are being persecuted for their faith.

Ellis Island was one of the many gateways to this country. If you ever get a chance, visit there. It's a fascinating place. I learned a great deal. I even found an ancestor's name on the wall outside. One of my uncles was named after him.

America was the land of wealth and the American Dream. Almost all of eastern Europe wanted to go to America at the time, but Jews especially were trying to escape persecution. If you can, try to rent the movie An American Tail.
