It just seems like two opportunities for artists to get awards for the same thing.

song of the year goes to the composer.
record of the year goes to the artist or performer, the producer, & engineer &/or mixer.

If the artist IS the composer, then yes they could potentially win two awards. But one is for the composition, while the other is for the performance & product.

Record of the year is for the producer. Song of the year is for the artist.

Record means the whole album of songs. I think it means more when your album hits more than one song to #1.

Obviously, song of the year is for a single song.
