EP is, as others have already said, short for "extended play", in comparison to regular singles. They don't count as albums for listing purposes, even though some touch on thirty minutes in length (for example the "silver" ep by Jesu). However, they don't qualify for the singles charts either, as they're too long.
It's usual for bands to put them out, if they do, in between full length albums rather than as a way of promoting an album itself.

EP is short for extended play. I have only seen it on old 33 rpm record albums. I wouldnt be surprised if half the people here have no idea what I was talking about in those first 2 sentences.

LP means Long play.
BTW....33's are regular record albums (LP). 78's are the EP's and 45's are singles in terms of vinyl records. I'm 32 years old, so NO you don't have be be farting dust to know what it means.
